For 27 years, The View From Madeleine’s Couch has given Australian audiences an exceptional experience of Brazilian, and Brazilian-influenced music, from classic bossa nova and Brazilian jazz, to their award-winning original music.
The band’s 20-year friendship with legendary Brazilian drummer Marcio Bahia (Hermeto Pascoal, Roberto Menescal), saw them on an 11 date tour with him in Brazil in 2012/13, with Marcio traveling to Brisbane to tour with the band multiple times since then.
In 2019, the band successfully crowdfunded to bring Marcio back to Brisbane to record Bossa Nova Sunset Club (Yama-Nui Records), and in 2022, he returned to perform with the band for their two sold-out 25th anniversary concerts at The Brisbane Powerhouse.
Co-founders Anje West, singing in fluent Portuguese and playing traditional Brazilian percussion, and Kym Ambrose (vibraphone), are among the most accomplished artists of this genre in the country, with a sound that is unique to Brazilian music in Australia.
With their longtime bandmates Bruce Woodward (guitar), OJ Newcomb (bass), and Paul Hudson/Lachlan Hawkins (drums), they’ve been a constant presence in the country’s diverse musical landscape for almost three decades, bringing their signature take on musica brasileira, and their joyful music-making to every show they play.
