– SONG A DAY –
23 Songs. 23 Days. One Ocean.
As part of the TransparentSea Voyage USA, Australian touring group Band of Frequencies — Shannon Sol Carroll, OJ Newcomb, and Al Hicks — embarked on an extraordinary journey: to write and record a song every day for 23 days while traveling 260 miles (418 km) down the Californian coast by sea and land.
Spearheaded by internationally renowned free-surfer David Rastovich, the TransparentSea campaign was designed to raise awareness of marine and coastal issues along one of the world’s most densely populated shorelines. Traveling in twin-seat Hobie kayaks from the Gaviota Coast to San Diego, the crew was joined by a vibrant array of musicians, surfers, and artists — including Angus Stone, Tristan Prettyman, Will Conner, Catherine Clark, Angela Iimura, and actress Isabel Lucas, as well as surfing legends John Peck, Rusty Miller, and Denny Aaberg.
Each song on the album is a raw, real-time reflection of that day’s journey — inspired by spontaneous experiences, shifting weather, wild encounters with dolphins, sea lions, and whales, and conversations with local communities, environmental groups, and even the U.S. military.
All songs were written and recorded on the same day, using just a single microphone — often around a campfire or inside the group’s roaming motorhome. Some songs were recorded in one take. None took more than three.
Featured Tracks & Stories:
Track 1: “These 20 Miles” (feat. Angus Stone & Isabel Lucas)
A dreamy ode to the Gaviota Coast — the last undeveloped stretch of Southern California shoreline. Angus distilled the lyrics to a sparse, poetic reflection that perfectly echoes the landscape’s untouched spirit.
“Painting on walls, making music around the fire … feeling the love from the big friendly giants of the ocean … It was special.” — Angus Stone
Track 7: “Willing the Fog to Burn” (feat. Catherine Clark)
Written after a harrowing 17-hour night crossing through thick fog, this haunting song captures the vulnerability of being lost at sea. Clark’s emotional performance, born from exhaustion and near-collapse, makes it one of the album’s most powerful moments.
Track 19: “I Heard the Word (The Future of Our Days)”
A call to conscious living in the face of climate crisis and corporate overreach. Written in response to global protests, it asks: What is enough? and challenges listeners to reflect on their own consumption.
“Our personal and collective decisions echo far into the daily reality of future generations. Less is more. Enough is enough.” — Shannon Sol Carroll
Track 16: “The Heart Song”
Recorded in ceremony with the Chumash Nation north of Malibu, this track remains untranslated as its lyrics — sung in the native tongue — await interpretation by tribal elders. The blessing from Chief Mati served as a spiritual anchor for the journey.
