Blending lo-fi soul with stunningly cinematic string arrangements, ‘Right Where You Are’ masterfully marries modern and vintage influences, creating a uniquely immersive soundscape. The single is a poignant exploration of deep love and the vulnerability inherent in believing that your feelings are reciprocated. Dustyn’s evocative lyrics and rich, atmospheric production capture the surreal, terrifying, yet brilliant essence of love. On the influences driving the new single, Dustyn has said:
“I was inspired by the moment in Wizard of Oz where Dorothy steps out of the fallen house and into munchkin land for the first time. As she opens the door to the technicolour world, the sound of the wind is an incredible vocal arrangement, alluding to dierent melodies and hook lines from the rest of the soundtrack. The way the vocals moved like the wind always blew me away and I wanted to emulate that somewhere in this song. So in the moment right before the final chorus I arranged my vocals in a similar way so that it feels like the song steps back into technicolour for the end.”
Written late at night on piano—an instrument Dustyn is less known for, given his reputation as a guitarist— ‘Right Where You Are’ showcases a new dimension of his songwriting skills. The track features lush string arrangements by Ross Irwin, renowned for his work with Cat Empire and The Bamboos, adding distinctive string lines to the composition. Mixing was handled by Francois Tetaz (Gotye, Kimbra, Lior, Baz Luhrmann films) whose Grammy-winning touch brought a cinematic depth to the track, cutting to the core of what the song is with his less-is-more approach, ensuring that each note resonates with emotional impact.
